CIMA is honored to host an evening of conversation with noted historians Anthony Grafton and Carlo Ginzburg exploring the work of Arnaldo Momigliano (1908-1987), one of the most distinguished 20th-century scholars of ancient and modern history. In 1939, following the passage of Italy’s racial laws, Momigliano was forced to leave his professorship in Turin. He continued his career at Oxford, London, and later in Chicago. His study of ancient and classic historiography and the emergence of national history are essential to the contemporary debate on religion, politics, and the understanding of the past. This program is presented in collaboration with the Centro Primo Levi and the Italian Cultural Institute and celebrates one year of Tablet in Print magazine. An Evening with Depero Futurista: The Bolted Book

One of the highlights of CIMA’s inaugural season, devoted to the Italian Futurist Fortunato Depero, was the display of Depero’s 1927 graphic design masterpiece, Depero Futurista, also known as The Bolted Book — on account of its distinctive binding: two industrial aluminum bolts. Join us on November 3 for an opportunity to see one of the rare original copies of this remarkable example of avant-garde bookmaking. Former CIMA Fellow Raffaele Bedarida will act as our guide through this “portable museum,” which Depero used as a kind of calling card to showcase his work. CIMA Founder-President Laura Mattioli will talk about the relationship her father, Gianni Mattioli, who was one of Depero’s principal patrons, had with the artist.
CIMA has partnered with Designers & Books and the Mart Museum of modern and contemporary art of Trento and Rovereto, which houses Depero’s archive, to produce a new facsimile of Depero Futurista and to bring this book and Depero’s life and work to a wider audience. The book will be produced via a Kickstarter campaign, launching October 18. It will include an accompanying readers guide, featuring essays from a variety of experts, original unpublished materials from the Depero archives at Mart, and translations of selected pages in the book.

Arte Povera Comes to the US: Germano Celant in conversation with Christian Rattemeyer

On the occasion of the launch of the Center for Italian Modern Art’s new season, dedicated to the artists Giorgio de Chirico and Giulio Paolini, CIMA welcomes the renowned art historian and curator Germano Celant in conversation with MoMA curator Christian Rattemeyer.
The discussion focuses on the landmark year of 1972, a crucial moment for the careers of both Germano Celant and leading conceptual artist Giulio Paolini. In November 1972, Celant curated the first exhibition of works by Giulio Paolini in the United States, held at the Sonnabend Gallery in New York, and authored the first Arte Povera monograph to be published in English (Giulio Paolini, Sonnabend Press/Tipostampa, New York/Turin, 1972). The 1972 show at Sonnabend Gallery bears witness to Celant’s seminal and long-term impulse to internationalize Italian art.
Moderated by CIMA 2016-17 Fellow Maria Bremer, CIMA’s program draws together Celant’s singular firsthand account with Rattemeyer’s perspective on the exhibition’s influence on a later generation of curators. Casting light on the respective 1970s art scenes in Italy and the US and their interconnectivity, the conversation will reveal new insights and raise new questions. Celant coined the term “Arte Povera” in 1967, and his inclusion of Paolini in a series of exhibitions during these year, inextricably associated Paolini with this movement.

Germano Celant has been Artistic Director of the Prada Foundation in Milan since 1993. Born in Genoa, Italy, in 1940, he became nationally and internationally renowned as a critic and curator after coining the term ‘Arte Povera’ in 1967. Author of numerous books, he has collaborated with the Guggenheim Museum in New York, where he worked as Senior Curator.
Christian Rattemeyer is the Harvey S. Shipley Miller associate curator at the Department of Drawings at MoMA. Born in 1971, he has worked extensively as a curator, freelance writer, and critic in Germany and the US, with a special interest in the history of exhibitions.

Since 2003, for two days each October, the Annual Open House New York Weekend unlocks the doors of New York’s most important buildings, offering an extraordinary opportunity to experience the city and meet the people who design, build, and preserve New York.
Irina Verona, the architect who renovated CIMA’s beautiful loft space, will be on hand to lead OpenDialogue tours at 11 am and 1 pm.
CIMA’s Fall Fellows, Maria Bremer and Giovanni Casini, will lead guided visits of Giorgio de Chirico – Giulio Paolini / Giulio Paolini – Giorgio de Chirico at 3 pm and 4.30 pm.

On the occasion of the launch of CIMA’s new season, dedicated to the artists Giorgio de Chirico and Giulio Paolini, CIMA welcomes Maddalena Disch, director of the Giulio and Anna Paolini Foundation, and CIMA’s founder-president Laura Mattioli in conversation with CIMA Fall Fellows Maria Bremer and Giovanni Casini.
The panelists will discuss the enigmatic and elusive nature of Giorgio de Chirico’s work and its lasting inspiration and influence on leading contemporary critics, collectors, and artists–particularly Giulio Paolini, as demonstrated in CIMA’s exhibition.
Maddalena Disch, as director of the Paolini Foundation and an expert on Paolini’s oeuvre, will share unique insights into the artist’s studio and practice, his discovery and appropriation of de Chirico’s work, and its reinvention through Paolini’s conceptual practice. Laura Mattioli will discuss the background of the Gianni Mattioli Collection’s history with de Chirico, and the anecdotal and biographical backdrops to her father’s collecting of de Chirico. This curatorial panel conversation will also address the broad themes that the work of these two artists shares and provide a rare look at the collecting practices and artistic environment of post-war Italy.

CIMA is pleased to inaugurate our Giorgio de Chirico – Giulio Paolini / Giulio Paolini – Giorgio de Chirico exhibition season with a special day exclusively for our members! Be the first to see CIMA’s new installation. Throughout opening day, October 14th, CIMA will offer special-access tours before the exhibition opens to the public.
Tours are led by our Fall Fellows, Maria Bremer and Giovanni Casini and will be offered at 11am, 1pm, 3pm, and 5pm. Each tour begins with a complimentary Lavazza espresso and lasts approximately one hour.
Prior to the event, CIMA Members will receive a private invitation via e-mail through which they may reserve a tour time.
