MEMBERS ONLY: PRIVATE CURATOR-LED TOUR OF ETTORE SOTTSASS: DESIGN RADICAL AT THE MET BREUER
September 07, 2017
Join us on Thursday, September 7 for a private morning visit to Ettore Sottsass: Design Radical, currently on view at The Met Breuer, led by Christian Larsen, curator of the exhibition. The show explores the career of Italian architect and designer Ettore Sottsass (1917–2007), presenting him as a seminal figure in 20th-century design by situating his work within a larger constellation of objects and artifacts drawn from across the history of art. Despite his ongoing impact on designers, Sottsass remains an obscure figure among the wider public. He is noted for founding the design collective Memphis (1981–86), but even this brief period is misunderstood as a quintessentially 1980s fashion-driven fad. This exhibition contextualizes his sixty-year career within a broader design discourse, revealing him as a true design radical.
